Certification Exams and Marketplace Fund Spend

Certifications keep your deal credit alive; marketplace funds pay for the marketing — but only inside the quarter.

A vendor certification track is built around one proctored exam: 60-90 questions in 60-90 minutes with a 70-80% pass mark, plus 2-5 lab credits. Plan 40-60 hours of preparation per engineer, and treat the credential as perishable — it stays valid for 12-24 months before renewal is due.

Sequence exams across quarters, not weeks. Three certifications represent roughly 120-180 hours of study and three exam sittings, which fits realistically into one to two quarters alongside billable work. Staggering sittings also staggers the renewal dates, so the whole bench does not lapse in the same month.

A lapse is expensive in a specific way: it typically costs 30-90 days of deal-registration credit rather than the tier itself, and audits pull one to three certificates per partner per year. The registration economics a lapse puts at risk are described in Deal Registration: How to Protect an Opportunity.

Marketplace development funds are allocated at roughly 1-3% of your prior-year purchases from the vendor. The structural trap is expiry: programmes commonly burn 25-50% of the unspent balance each fiscal quarter rather than rolling it over, so a fund left untouched loses roughly 70-95% of its value within a year.

Plan fund spend the way the fund expires — quarterly. Request money against dated activities, submit proof of performance inside the same quarter, and split large campaigns into quarter-sized pieces. The tier requirements these funds and certificates support are summarised in What Each Channel Partner Tier Requires.

  • Space the three exam sittings across one to two quarters — 120-180 study hours rarely fits into less.
  • Renew certificates before the 12-24-month validity ends, never inside an audit window.
  • Request marketplace funds against activities already dated in the current quarter.
  • Claim proof of performance in-quarter; a slipped claim is part-funded by the 25-50% expiry.
